MIAMI, Florida – Guyana booked their spot in the Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship at the expense of Haiti, while Trinidad & Tobago was also eliminated at the qualifying stage on Tuesday night.
Guyana’s Under-20 Women’s team celebrate after defeating Haiti 1-0 in the Concacaf Women’s Qualifiers With the win, Guyana leapfrogged Haiti to finish in first position in Group A on seven points with Haiti second on six points.Needing a win to advance to the next phase of the competition, Guyana defeated Haiti 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Myanne Fernandes in the 54th minute.
They joined Puerto Rico, Panama, Canada, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica in the next round and will face Mexico and the United States to battle for four spots in the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.
However, there was heartbreak for T&T, who were drubbed 12-0 at home by Canada in their must-win match at the Ato Boldon Stadium.
Canada was led by hat-tricks from Annabelle Chukwu (6′, 11′, 56′) and Kierra Blundell (71′, 85′, 90′), while Kaylee Hunter (8′), Léa Larocuhe (36′), Juliette Perreault (50′), Jeneva Hernandez Gray (54′), Teegan Melenhorst (74′), and Ella Kettles (90’+2) also got on the scoresheet.
