Second Season of Reddish Foundation Community 8 V 8 Night League Ended in December With Win by LLPG FC
Determined to instill unity in his hometown, Garnel Reddish, an Orlando-based Jamaican launched a soccer tournament there early last year. Its second season ended in December and drew enthusiastic crowds.
LLPG FC won the Reddish Foundation Community 8 V 8 Night League by beating One Link FC 3-1 on penalties in the final, which ended 1-1 after full time. The match took place on December 24 in Pimento Walk, a rustic district in St. Ann parish, northern Jamaica.
The champions received $670 while One Link FC, who also finished runners-up in the inaugural season, were awarded $350. Sajay Anderson, who scored the goal that tied the final for LLPG FC, was joint leading scorer with four goals with Raheim Brown.
Aladdin Smith of One Link was selected as top goalkeeper in the two-month tournament which was contested by 13 teams from St. Ann, birthplace of Pan African icon Marcus Garvey, reggae legend Bob Marley and Donald Harris, father of US vice Kamala Harris.
Reddish is satisfied with the response to the league which he co-sponsored.
“I am overall pleased with the turnout each and every Sunday, and also the night of the final. I am grateful and give big thanks to all members of the Reddish Foundation Inc team,” he said.
Many members of the Jamaican Diaspora fund community projects in their birthplace, especially in rural parishes like St. Ann. Reddish got involved in early 2024 to develop camaraderie in his native Pimento Walk and nearby districts.
Michael Belnavis, mayor of St. Ann’s Bay and one of the league’s co-sponsors, lived in South Florida for several years.
