Immigration Advocates Press New York Lawmakers to Strengthen Immigrant Protections

Kathy Hochul

NEW YORK, New York – Immigration advocates rallied at the State Capitol in Albany on Wednesday, calling for the swift passage of the New York for All Act to strengthen protections for immigrants across the state.

The demonstration, led by the New York Immigration Coalition, brought together elected officials and community groups who described the legislation as critical to safeguarding immigrant communities.

The bill seeks to limit cooperation between state and local agencies and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, while ensuring immigrants can access essential services without fear.

Advocates urged Governor Kathy Hochul and lawmakers to act before the state budget is finalized, warning that existing measures are inadequate.

They argued that unlike other proposals, the New York for All Act would establish clear, lasting protections and prevent the use of local resources to support federal immigration enforcement.

Supporters of the bill say it is necessary to reduce deportations, prevent family separations, and address concerns about collaboration between law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. They also stressed that stronger legal safeguards would help restore trust between immigrant communities and public institutions.

With pressure mounting, advocates say the decision now rests with state leaders to determine whether New York will adopt comprehensive protections or continue with limited measures.
