Florida Republicans, Voter Suppression & “The Poll Tax”

Tallahassee— The A.C.L.U., the Florida State Conference of Branches, Youth Units of the N.A.A.C.P. and the Brennan Center for Law at the N.Y.U. Law has filed suit against the Florida law that subverts the will of the voters by blocking the automatic restoration of voting rights for non-violent felons.

Warren Questions ICE About Reports of Misuse of Solitary Confinement at Immigration Detention Facilities

Washington, DC - United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) today sent a letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) expressing concern and requesting information regarding the agency's reported misuse of solitary confinement at detention facilities. The senator's letter follows reports that ICE immigration detention facilities are relying on solitary confinement (segregation) "as a go-to tool to manage and punish vulnerable detainees" and "to house detainees they simply don't know what do with."

Senator Warren Investigates Reports that ICE has Secretly Transferred Migrants

Washington, DC - United States Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) yesterday sent a letter to Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Mark Morgan seeking answers regarding reports that ICE has signed new contracts for three for-profit immigration detention centers in Mississippi and Louisiana: Adams County Correctional Center (operated by CoreCivic, one of the largest for-profit prison operators in the country), Catahoula Correctional Center, and South Louisiana ICE Processing Center (operated by GEO Group, another giant for-profit prison operator). If the reports are correct, it appears that ICE has decided to place immigrant detainees at these facilities without providing proper notice, despite the fact that they pose serious health and safety concerns.

Mucarsel-Powell Announces Nearly $6 Million in FEMA Grants to Monroe County

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26), member of the Economic Development, Public Buildings & Emergency Management Subcommittee of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is awarding $5,911,779 to Monroe County for debris removal resulting from Hurricane Irma.
