“Japan, I’m Coming!” – Fraser-Pryce Anticipating Tokyo Return In September
KINGSTON, Jamaica - In an emotional finale at the national stadium, sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce secured her spot on Jamaica’s team for the Tokyo Olympics, finishing third in the women’s 100m final with a time of 10.91 seconds.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.The race marked her last competitive appearance at the iconic venue, closing another chapter in her storied career.
It was a night that the adoring Jamaican track and field fans came to see the ‘Pocket Ricket’ Fraser-Pryce, but it was rising star Tina Clayton, the two-time World U20 champion, who stole the show with a personal best of 10.81 seconds to win the sprint event.
Three-time defending champion Shericka Jackson claimed second in a season’s best 10.88, but it was Fraser-Pryce, now 38, who electrified the crowd, proving once again that her fighting spirit remains unmatched.
“One thing I knew I had on my side was experience,” said Fraser-Pryce. “I’m grateful for that fighting spirit that says it’s never over until it’s over. Once I step on the start line, I am ready. Knowing that I’m not race-sharp and still running 10.91 is a big deal.”
The Tokyo Games hold special significance for the multiple world and Olympic champion, who made her senior international debut in Japan at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka.
“Many people don’t know that Japan is where I started my first senior international championships. It’s such a full-circle moment for me to be going back.”
The decorated athlete says she will be putting in more work, as she knows very well that the competition at the Championships will be fierce.
“I have a goal and I have a task and I have a job to do and that’s to come out here and to run my race. Everything else is noise, and I have to block that noise out to get to my race and do my best. After that, I can marvel in the celebration and look forward to what’s to come.”
