The following is an open letter to Haiti President Jovenel Moise written April 21 by Marleine Bastien, executive director the South Florida-based Family Action Network Movement (FANM). According to the Haiti Press Network, 129 Haitian nationals, including 49 minors, were scheduled to be deported to Haiti on April 23. The letter has been edited for length, style and content.

Today, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued updated guidance for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients with qualifying dependents eligible for COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments.

Plagues have been around for centuries. They’ve even been chronicled in the Bible, when locusts, toads, flies, pestilence and diseases tormented mankind.

Census Day 2020 came and went this year without a lot of fanfare as it was upstaged by the dreaded new coronavirus (COVID-19) that is spreading death and mayhem across the globe.

Under the direction and management, President Donald Trump, and his coronavirus task force of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been mass death. With over 56,000 deaths, and over one million cases of the virus, there are still no mask, limited ventilators, limited gowns, limited tests-kits, and massive corruption.

The Democrats are struggling in the 2020 presidential campaign. Senator, Bernie Sanders is leading the pack of Democratic candidates, but he is not really a Democrat, so the campaign is really confusing. Senator Sanders is an independent, and a socialist, and with the label of socialist, he will probably lose to President Trump.

As Florida begins to reopen under Governor Ron DeSantis’s plan, there are over 34,000 infected with the virus and over 1,300 have died. It is a sad statement on testing in the state, when only 2% of the state has been tested, and very few trust the data and results. It is shameful in the state that the media were forced to file a lawsuit to release data on covid-19, to get information on nursing homes, and long term care centers.

On March 24, three correctional officers were reported to have contracted coronavirus - one officer at each of the three jails in Miami-Dade County. By April 11, 40 corrections staff tested positive for the virus.  In Broward County, nine people in custody tested positive for the virus on April 12, with one dying as a result.  As a civil rights attorney and candidate for Miami-Dade State Attorney, I have been calling for the release of nonviolent offenders from our jails, as well as a moratorium on seeking cash bail for nonviolent offenders to slow the spread of COVID-19. 

On October 30, 2019 following an in depth, fair public procurement RFP process as determined by the Office of Inspector General, Mayor Carlos Gimenez signed a letter of recommendation for the Advanced Traffic Management System. This system will provide traffic lights throughout the county with the technology to improve the flow of traffic and decrease traffic congestion.

There is something wrong in President Trump’s Administration, when the Center for Disease Control is being muzzled and giving very little information about the coronavirus and covid-19. With some of the smartest scientist and the most knowledgeable people in America about pandemics, they are silent and not holding daily and weekly discussions with the media and television news.
