Mucarsel-Powell Statements on Critical Immigration and Venezuelan Assistance Legislation Passing House and Senate Committees

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26), member of the Judiciary Committee and Hispanic Caucus and the first South American-born member of Congress, lauded the passage of three critical immigration bills out of the Judiciary Committee – H.R. 2820, the Dream Act, H.R. 2821, the Promise Act, and H.R. 549 the Venezuela TPS Act – as well as H.R. 854 the Humanitarian Assistance to the Venezuelan People Act of 2019, being reported out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Mucarsel-Powell released the following statement:

Kamala Harris Caribbean 2019 NAACP Speech

Detroit, MI - As keynote speaker at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) 64th Annual Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner held in Detroit, Michigan on May 5, 2019, U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-Cali.), the first black woman of both West Indian and East Indian descent to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, said, “We must push for change not only from the outside but also from the inside and at the table where the decisions are being made.” She also stated that it’s time to “speak truth” in America, and called for a “new kind of leadership.” Sen. Harris, whose speech was punctuated by the applause of some 10,000 attendees, went on to honor the late Civil Rights leader Judge Damon Keith, saying, “His rulings advanced the cause of equality and his legacy will have a lasting impact on generations to come.”

Warren, Sanders, Velázquez, Gillibrand, Markey, Harris Reintroduce Comprehensive Debt-Relief Legislation for Puerto Rico, U.S. Territories

Washington, DC - United States Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today reintroduced the U.S. Territorial Relief Act to provide a pathway to comprehensive debt relief for Puerto Rico and other disaster-ravaged U.S. territories so they can recover and rebuild with dignity. The legislation gives territories the option to terminate their debt obligations if they meet certain stringent eligibility criteria. Joining Senators Warren and Sanders in reintroducing the bill are Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.). Representative Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) will be reintroducing companion legislation in the House of Representatives.

Detroit, MI - As keynote speaker at the NAACP 64th Annual Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner, which sat approximately 10,000 guests, Democratic presidential candidate US Senator Kamala Harris repeatedly stated that it is time for our leaders “to speak truth.” In a fiery speech punctuated with cheers and applause, Harris also said, “We must push for change not only from the outside but also from the inside and at the table where the decisions are being made.”

Disappointed But Not Deterred

MIRAMAR, FL --- Despite only receiving 11 percent of the votes in Tuesday’s Miramar elections, a “disappointed, but not deterred,” Gilling said after learning the results of the election. “Tonight, after a long and competitive campaign, I lost my bid for Miramar Commissioner. While I am naturally disappointed, my awesome team of volunteers did not leave any stones unturned and we campaigned with everything we had every day for the last 10 months. The camaraderie developed among us was truly special and this feeling of warmth and togetherness will remain with me always.”
