Chairman-Elect Diaz Seeks Donations for Victims of Hurricanes Iota and Eta

MIAMI-DADE – The Miami-Dade County Commission on Dec. 15 approved a resolution sponsored by Chairman-elect Jose “Pepe” Diaz to allow County employees to contribute the monetary value of their accrued holiday and annual leave time to the county’s Emergency Disaster Relief Fund to help Central America recover from the devastating effects of Hurricanes Eta and Iota.

Commissioners Discuss Making Juneteenth an Official Broward County Holiday

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Commissioners are considering designating June 19th, also known as Juneteenth, an official paid holiday for Broward County. Juneteenth commemorates the official end of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had officially outlawed slavery in 1863, but it took more than two years for slavery to come to an end throughout the United States. 

Miramar Cultural Center Partners with FLIPANY Organization to Feed 100 Families Weekly

MIRAMAR, FL –The Miramar Cultural Center(MCC) is truly a place where Community and Culture Converge™.  More than 100 children and their families have received a week’s supply of fresh food thanks to a new partnership betweenMCC and FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition), a company whose programs are designed to fight childhood obesity and hunger by focusing on healthy food preparation. The meal distribution program at MCC started on November 17, 2020 and will take place every Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the MCC Stage Door Parking Lot. Soft Launch Set for Nation’s First Caribbean-American Heritage Museum

Plantation, Florida :Board members, community partners and volunteers of the Florida-based nonprofit, Island SPACE are excited to welcome guests and patrons to explore the nation’s first Caribbean-American Museum, opening at the Westfield Broward Mall in January, 2021. Media, underwriters and invited guests will have the exclusive chance to explore the space and engage with the exhibits on Monday, November 16th, and the general public will be welcomed to preview the space starting Thursday, November 19th.

Statement from Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava on Her Positive COVID Test

MIAMI —"Earlier today I tested positive for COVID-19, after learning that my husband, Dr. Robert Cava, was exposed to the virus by one of his patients last Wednesday; he also tested positive today. Rob and I are quarantining safely at home. We both remain in good spirits and are fortunate to have only mild symptoms at this time. My thoughts are with all the doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, police, and fire rescue workers across our community who continue to serve and protect Miami-Dade residents despite great personal risk to themselves and their loved ones.

CARES Act Rental and Business Assistance Programs Extended

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Home-based businesses are now eligible to apply for Broward County CARES Act small business assistance. Additionally, the deadline to apply for the CARES Act business and rental assistance programs has been extended through December 9th at 11:59PM. These programs are made possible by the Broward County Commission and funded through the federal CARES Act. Monies distributed do not need to be paid back.

MDC Hialeah Campus to Host Virtual Talk with Dr. Jane Elliot on Racism and Its Effects on Society

Miami, - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Hialeah Campus’ Impact Committee will host Racism and Its Effects on Society, an online presentation by lifelong educator, author, and award-winning anti-racism activist  Dr. Jane Elliott on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. Dr. Elliott will discuss race and politics, combating racism, and how race and racial inequality have shaped American history. She will also focus on unlearning racial biases and recognizing its impact on our communities. There will be a Q & A session following the presentation.
