Congresswoman Wilson to Host Forum on COVID-19 in Haiti and the Dangers of Continued U.S. Deportations

Miami, FL – Congresswoman Wilson will host a forum titled “An Impending Crisis: COVID-19 in Haiti, Ongoing Instability, and the Dangers of Continued U.S. Deportations,” featuring House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel; Leonie Hermantin, Haitian community leader and director of Development, Communications, and Strategic Planning for the Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center; Clarel Cyriaque, a practicing attorney who represents immigrants facing deportation; Dan Erikson, senior fellow at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement and former special advisor to Vice President Joe Biden; Cate Oswald, chief policy and partnership officer for Partners in Health; and Jake Johnston, senior research associate at the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

Excellent Samuel Sharpe, National Hero, on Saturday, May 23 at the National Heroes Park in Kingston.The somber event was held in commemoration of the 188th Anniversary of his death. Sam Sharpe led the 1831 Christmas Rebellion in Jamaica, which broke the back of chattel slavery in Jamaica and eventually led to the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of slaves in Jamaica and the wider Western Hemisphere.

Commissioner Yvette Colbourne Delivers Close to 2,000 Hot Lunches to Seniors During COVID-19

City of Miramar, FL—City of Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne has been providing 300 weekly hot meals to seniors in the City of Miramar during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the pandemic began, Miramar Senior Centers closed its doors and asked senior citizens to remain at home for their safety. Commissioner Colbourne became concerned that seniors may not have the hot lunches they were used to receiving at the senior centers.

Black Enterprise’ Founder Dies

Earl Graves Sr., son of Barbadian Americans and founder of the first black-owned magazine in the United States which focused on African American entrepreneurs, died last month in New York. He was 85.
