CASTRIES, St. Lucia – The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission says it will launch the Sargassum Regional Strategies for Ecosystem-based Actions (SARSEA) project that aims to support the Caribbean region in developing sustainable solutions for the management, transformation, and valorisation of sargassum.
The SARSEA project is funded by the Agence Française de Developpment (Afd), with support from the French national research institute for sustainable development (IRD).

It is also intended to strengthen regional cooperation in the Caribbean and support four OECS member states in developing a structured framework for managing and utilising sargassum, a growing environmental and economic challenge affecting coastal communities and ecosystems across the region.
The Commission, along with Expertise France, said the launch will take place here on Tuesday next week, and will engage regional stakeholders to ensure strong institutional support.
“This event marks a major milestone in advancing regional efforts to address the sargassum challenge through science, collaboration, and innovation,” the Commission said, adding that through research, policy dialogue, and stakeholder engagement, SARSEA seeks to support the Caribbean in building a sustainable, collective, and inclusive response that serves ecosystems and communities.
