MIRAMAR, FL – The City of Miramar through its Public Works Department was awarded a $20,000 matching grant from the State of Florida Forestry Division to perform a tree count and assessment of the trees located within the City of Miramar’s public and Right of Ways (ROW) areas. Through this grant, the City of Miramar contracted with national vendor, Arbor Pro USA for these services.
BROWARD COUNTY, FL - November 15th marks the beginning of manatee season which runs through March 31st. As air and water temperature drop, manatees begin moving south toward warm-water refuges while seasonal and manatee protection speed limit zones go into effect throughout the State. Broward County’s Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division implements the county’s manatee conservation program and cautions boaters to be on the lookout for greater numbers of manatee presence throughout the County’s waterways (including the intracoastal, canals, and natural waterways) during the cooler months.

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – A record breaking success for the Ocean Conservancy’s 34th Annual International Coastal Cleanup of Broward County, thanks to Broward’s Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division. More than 6,710 pounds of trash were collected in September, which included 23,000 small plastic pieces. Angel Rovira and Pat Quinn were Zone Co-Captains and coordinated 3,692 volunteers who fanned out along 11 coastal sites within the coastal municipalities and state parks from Pompano Beach to Hallandale Beach.
Tuesday, October 1st, officially marked the beginning of the 2019-2020 fishing season of the Queen Conch (Strombus Gigas). The season closed on April 30th, and after six months, fishermen across the country are once again allowed to harvest one of the most significant sources of revenue in the fishing industry. Conch is a staple across Belize, prepared in dishes like ceviche, soups, and fritters among others.
MIAMI-DADE – The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners today (Feb. 4) passed legislation to help improve water testing for contamination of our Bay and Beaches.
MIAMI — On Saturday, November 2, 2019, the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, together with The Mission Continues 1st Platoon Miami, United Way of Miami-Dade, and community partners, pitched in for the inaugural “Salute to Service Volunteer Day” at Miami-Dade Parks’ Seminole Wayside Park. The event is a preserve revitalization project for the park and an inaugural signature celebration for National Veterans & Military Families Month and kick-off the November Veterans Day festivities.
October 2019 — This month, youth climate advocates came together around the world to highlight the global climate emergency, and Miami Beach listened. The city declared its own climate emergency in response and vowed to prioritize climate change on its agenda.
BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Biologists with the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program were busy this year monitoring the beaches for sea turtle nests. Preliminary nest counts report that 3,338 nests were documented in the County (not including the Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park) this year. Among the 3,338 nests were 43 leatherback nests, 2,560 loggerhead nests, and a local record of 735 green turtle nests.
MIAMI-DADE – The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners on Oct. 29 passed legislation aimed at ending the rampant abuse of agricultural lands being turned into trucking depots.
MIAMI – FIU was awarded a $3 million grant to investigate how corals are responding to climate change at the molecular level from the National Science Foundation’s Understanding the Rules of Life (URoL): Epigenetics program.
