Dr. Rosemarie Lewis of Jamaica Places Second in Senior Miss Black America Pageant
Although placing second in the Senior Miss Black America pageant in February, Jamaican Dr. Rosemarie Lewis said competing allowed her to express the Caribbean experience in the United States.
Lewis, a health care professional based in South Florida, was runner-up to 71-year-old Dobreena Helm of Union, New Jersey. This year’s event took place during the February 14-22 Positivity Cruise aboard the Carnival Horizon.
Describing her runner-up spot as a “remarkable achievement”, Lewis said participating in the 58 year-old contest allowed her to, “Showcase my dedication to empowering women and celebrating Black excellence.”
The pageant comprised four segments --- talent, cultural presentation, evening wear and interview. In her cultural presentation, Lewis portrayed Maya Angelou, the legendary American poet and Civil Rights activist.
She pointed to the rounded format as the main reason for entering the Senior Miss Black America contest.
“As a public official and woman, my participation highlights the importance of representation and role-modeling for younger generations. My influence to enter likely stems from a desire to inspire and uplift others, while also embracing my heritage and cultural identity,” she said. “The pageant provides a platform to amplify my voice, share my story, and connect with like-minded individuals.”
From Manchester parish in central Jamaica, Lewis is a mental health specialist who has lived in South Florida for over 30 years. She is active in Diaspora affairs, and has led many medical missions to Jamaica to assist people with health challenges through her Rose’s Garden of Hope organization.
Her appearance in the Senior Miss Black America contest exceeded expectations.
"The pageant experience was a transformative journey that allowed me to connect with incredible women and amplify my passion for empowerment. Specifically, the emphasis on community service and personal growth resonated deeply with me,” said Lewis.
