How Two Jamaicans Are Helping Redefine Wellness Tourism in Jamaica

As travelers increasingly seek vacations that restore as much as they entertain, two Jamaicans are betting that the future of Caribbean tourism lies at the intersection of wellness, music, culture and community.

nadwellThis September, Nadine McNeil and internationally known DJ Jason "DJ Shogun" Murdock will launch Party with a Purpose, a five-day experience in Montego Bay designed to offer visitors more than a traditional holiday. Combining yoga, meditation, cultural excursions, live entertainment and authentic Jamaican experiences, the event reflects a growing movement within global tourism toward travel that prioritizes both celebration and personal well-being.

For the cousins, the concept evolved from years of observing how travelers naturally blended the two.

"We've spent years proving that celebration and well-being are not opposites—they're partners," says McNeil. "Some of the most meaningful moments happen when people feel free enough to laugh, dance, move, connect and simply be themselves."

Working together aboard international music cruises—including the Welcome to Jamrock Cruise, the Maxwell Urban Suite Cruise and the Rise & Rhythm Gospel Cruise—they noticed a pattern. Guests would dance late into the night before showing up the next morning for yoga or meditation, eager to participate in both experiences.

"There was something incredibly powerful about watching that," McNeil says. "People weren't choosing between joy and wellness. They were embracing both."

Their observations align with broader changes taking place across the tourism industry. Wellness travel has become one of the fastest-growing segments of global tourism, with travelers increasingly seeking experiences that combine physical activity, mental well-being, meaningful cultural engagement and opportunities to disconnect from the pressures of everyday life.

McNeil believes Jamaica is well positioned to meet that demand.

Known internationally for its music, hospitality and natural beauty, the island already offers many of the elements today's travelers are seeking. The opportunity, she says, is to intentionally bring those experiences together in ways that encourage both connection and renewal.

Unlike traditional wellness retreats, Party with a Purpose is designed with flexibility in mind. Guests can participate in yoga and meditation sessions, explore Montego Bay, enjoy local cuisine, spend time at the beach or immerse themselves in music and cultural experiences throughout the weekend.

"Some people want every activity," says Murdock. "Others want a massage, a beach chair and a great conversation. We wanted to create something that respects both."

The cousins bring complementary backgrounds to the venture.

McNeil has spent more than two decades in international humanitarian leadership with the United Nations while also teaching yoga, meditation and holistic wellness. Murdock has built an international reputation as a DJ, performing at festivals, concerts and music cruises throughout the Caribbean and North America.

Together, they see wellness as extending far beyond fitness or meditation.

"It's also found in laughter, music, storytelling, shared meals and genuine human connection," McNeil says.

Their vision comes as Caribbean destinations continue exploring ways to diversify tourism offerings beyond traditional sun-and-sand vacations. Experiences rooted in culture, authenticity and well-being are increasingly being recognized as opportunities to attract travelers seeking longer-lasting value from their time in the region.

For McNeil and Murdock, that evolution begins with inviting visitors to experience Jamaica not simply as a destination, but as a place where celebration and restoration naturally coexist.

Party with a Purpose will take place September 3–7, 2026, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, and is open to solo travelers, couples and groups.
