Guyana Unveils First Locally Minted Independence Gold Medallion
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Guyana has officially launched the country’s national gold and jewellery brand under the brand name “Eldorado Reimagined” marking a historic milestone in the transformation of the country’s gold sector.
The Ministry of Natural Resources said that the medallion signifies a moving away from raw commodity production to value-added manufacturing and craftsmanship.
It said the launch coincides with the celebrations leading up to Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary on Tuesday and also featured the unveiling of the country’s first-ever minted in-country Independence commemorative gold medallion, using 100 per cent locally sourced gold.
President Irfaan Ali described the initiative as a defining moment in Guyana’s economic and cultural development, noting that “tonight represents more than the launch of a brand. It represents Guyana taking ownership of its story, its resources, and its future.
“For generations, our gold largely left these shores as a raw commodity. Today, we are demonstrating to the world that Guyana is capable of refining, manufacturing, and exporting excellence.”
Ali also said that the launch of Eldorado Reimagined reflects Guyana’s ambition to position itself as a globally recognised hub for high-quality gold products and jewellery manufacturing. “This initiative is about creating value within Guyana, expanding opportunities for our people, supporting local craftsmanship, and building an internationally respected Guyanese gold identity.”
Natural Resources Minister, Vickram Bharrat, said the launch signalled the beginning of a new chapter for the country’s gold industry, noting that “Eldorado Reimagined is the result of a deliberate national vision to move Guyana beyond extraction and into value creation.
“This brand represents quality, authenticity and national pride. It is about reshaping the narrative of Guyanese gold and ensuring that more of the value generated from our natural resources remains within our country.
“This medallion is not simply a collectible. It is a symbol of Guyana’s progress and advancements in the sector. The fact that the gold was mined and refined in Guyana, the product was designed in Guyana, and for the first time, a commemorative medallion was minted in Guyana using Guyanese gold makes this an extraordinary achievement for our country” he added.
The commemorative medallion, struck in one troy ounce of .999 fine gold, was produced as a limited-edition piece to commemorate Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Each medallion bears an individual serial number and reflects the craftsmanship capabilities emerging within the local sector.
