Edwin Raymond Sworn-in as NYC’s First Haitian-American Sheriff

NEW YORK, New York – Edwin Raymond has been officially sworn-in as New York City’s first Haitian-American sheriff during a ceremony at Brooklyn College, where New York State Attorney General Letitia James administered the oath of office.

New York City Department of Finance (DOF) said Sheriff Raymond assumed his duties on May 29, 2026 following his appointment by Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani.

As sheriff, Raymond will lead one of the nation’s oldest law enforcement agencies.

The Sheriff’s Office is New York City’s chief civil law-enforcement agency and the law-enforcement division of the DOF.

It’s deputies enforce court orders and judgments, serve orders of protection, seize illegal firearms and contraband, investigate deed and tax fraud, and carry out many other responsibilities essential to public safety and the administration of justice.

“Sheriff Edwin Raymond understands that public safety requires public trust, and he has always fought for the transparency and accountability our communities deserve,” James said. “I know that he will serve our city with integrity, compassion and a deep commitment to justice.

“I am proud to celebrate his swearing-in as New York City’s next sheriff, and I look forward to continuing to work together on behalf of all New Yorkers,” added the New York Attorney General.

Mamdani said Raymond has “dedicated his life to protecting the people of New York while bettering the institutions tasked with keeping us safe.

“He grew up in East Flatbush (Brooklyn), the son of Haitian immigrants,” the mayor said. “He became an NYPD (New York Police Department) officer to build bridges and write a new legacy.

“His life’s work has been fighting for truth, justice and safety,” Mamdani added. “I can think of no one better to serve as the Sheriff of the City of New York.”

Raymond told the ceremony that serving as New York City Sheriff is “a tremendous privilege and a responsibility I do not take lightly.

“Growing up in East Flatbush as the son of Haitian immigrants, I learned firsthand that keeping our working-class neighborhoods safe depends on trust in government and the institutions that serve our communities,” he said. “Throughout my career, I have been committed to public service and to strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and the people we serve.

“As sheriff, I will continue to lead with integrity, accountability and fairness, and I look forward to working alongside the dedicated professionals of the Sheriff’s Office to serve and protect all New Yorkers,” Raymone pledged.

DOF Commissioner Richard Lee that “Sheriff Raymond comes to this role after a distinguished career in public safety, marked by an unwavering commitment to accountability, justice and public trust.

“We are fortunate to welcome a sheriff who appreciates both the rich history of this office and the responsibility of leading it into the future.

“His experience building strong community relationships while advancing accountability will strengthen our mission to serve New Yorkers,” Lee added.

Raymond is a retired New York City Police Department lieutenant and former Social Justice Liaison in the New York State Office of the Attorney General.

During his 15-year NYPD career, the DOF said he served in a variety of operational and leadership roles, ultimately leading Community Affairs for Patrol Borough Brooklyn North.

Throughout his career, Raymond has been recognized for his “leadership and commitment to advancing integrity and accountability in law enforcement.”

As New York City Sheriff, Raymond oversees the Sheriff’s Office within the DOF.
