According to a Barbados government statement, the two leaders discussed the importance of maintaining close dialogue amid global uncertainty, particularly the role of small states, open economies and democratic partners in defending cooperation, stability and an effective international rules-based order.

Climate and clean air also featured prominently in the discussions, including the need to accelerate international action on methane emissions and other super pollutants.

The statement said the discussions built on Barbados’ broader advocacy, including through the Bridgetown Initiative, for fairer climate finance, resilience-building and solutions that recognise the lived reality of small island developing states.

Mottley and Starmer also explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in tourism, investment and research, including in climate resilience, clean energy, ocean and coastal systems, water security, sargassum innovation and sustainable tourism.

The meeting also reaffirmed the importance of the Commonwealth as a platform for cooperation on trade, business, climate, security and development.

According to the statement, Barbados and the United Kingdom will continue to work through bilateral, regional and Commonwealth channels to advance opportunities that support prosperity, resilience and security.
