ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – One year before Grenadians are schedule to go to the polls to elect a new government, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is outlining how its manifesto will be developed.
NDC leader and Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell telling supporters they will be responsible for writing the party’s manifesto ahead of the next general election (CMC Photo)Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell told party supporters that beginning in July, the party, which won nine of the 15 seats in the June 23, 2022 general election, would be visiting every constituency to hear directly from voters, their ideas, priorities and your vision for Grenada’s future.
“.…we want you the people, you the people, to write the manifesto for the National Democratic Congress in the next election. So we will do that, starting in July and August, we will go to all of the polling divisions and we will meet with you in each constituency, in each parish, and we will ask you to tell us what you want done in your village, in your polling division, in your constituency,” NDC leader said.
“We will write that down, we will put it together, and then we will come back and present it to you as a manifesto of the people, co-authored by you, for you, and for the development of Grenada for the next five years<‘ he said at the party’s fourth anniversary celebrations on Sunday night.
Mitchell said that by writing their own manifesto, the NDC supporters are ensuring that “there will be no change in government for the next five years.
“There will be no change in the party that is going to run this country for the next five years, because you, the people of Grenada, you, the people of Grenada, have chosen, you’ve seen the work over the last five years, you’ve seen the energy over the last five years, you’ve seen the empathy and the care over the last five years.
“… you’ve seen if we’ve fallen short that we accept our blame, we accept the criticism, and we put on our boots to try again. So when you write the manifesto, you are doing so understanding that the National Democratic Congress will be in office come 2027 to 2032,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell hinted as the possibility of an early poll, telling supporters ““register your children. Register your brothers and sisters. Check your ID cards. Make sure your neighbours and your friends know that we are ready to go.
“The conch shell is coming. Get ready, stay aggressive, stay positive, register to vote and make sure your families come out, because elections have consequences,” he added.
The last general election was the first time since 2008 where the NDC won any seat, defeating the then ruling New National Party (NNP) which had been in control of all 15 seats in the Parliament.
Since then the NNP has elected un-opposed Emmalin Pierre as its leader after Dr. Keith Mitchell, the party’s founder and former prime minister stepped down.
The NDC is also expected to face a challenge from the Democratic People’s Movement (DPM) of former foreign affairs minister Peter David that was established in November last year.
