GEORGETOWN, Guyana – President Irfaan Ali has held talks with a bipartisan United States congressional delegation that focused on strengthening the partnership between Guyana and the United States.
Ali said that he had during the discussions informed the delegation led by Senator Christopher Coons, “outlined my Government’s transformation agenda since 2020, including our investments in infrastructure and development, food and energy security, health care, education and agriculture.
“I also reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to working closely with the United States to combat drug trafficking and transnational organised crime, strengthen security cooperation and uphold respect for territorial sovereignty,” Ali said in a statement posted on his official Facebook page.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel John Mohanlall has become the first Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officer to graduate from the prestigious United States Army War College.
“His achievement reflects the excellence of U.S. strategic military education and reinforces the deepening defense partnership between the United States and Guyana,” according to statement issued by the US Embassy here.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohanlall was awarded a Master of Strategic Studies degree and designated a Senior Service College Graduate. Conducted at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, the programme provides advanced professional military education at the strategic level. It prepares senior military officers, government officials and international fellows for leadership, command and advisory responsibilities.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohanlall studies addressed national security, military research, defence management, joint operations and international affairs, with a focus on complex national, regional and global security challenges.
“This achievement marks an important stage in Lieutenant Colonel Mohanlall’s professional career and adds to the GDF’s growing pool of officers with advanced strategic expertise. The knowledge, analytical skills and professional relationships acquired through the programme will support the Force’s work in strategic planning, defence management and institutional advancement,” the GDF said in a statement.
“As Guyana’s national security environment continues to evolve, developing strategic expertise remains essential to the GDF’s capacity to support national defence and security objectives,” it said, adding that Lieutenant Colonel Mohanlall’s qualification strengthens the Force’s senior leadership capacity and enhances its ability to address complex defence and security challenges.
