Senior UNDP Official to Visit Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator and United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General, Alexander De Croo, is to pay a two day visit to Jamaica from March 5.

aldoccAlexander De CrooA statement said De Croo, who is currently on a two-day visit to Haiti,  will visit Hurricane Melissa impacted communities and engage in crisis resilience and hurricane recovery talks with government and private sector partners.

The former prime minister and minister of finance of Belgium is expected to meet with Prime Minister Andrew Holness and members of his cabinet and will also headline the “Thought Leaders Dialogue on Private Sector and Sustainable Finance Partnerships for Resilient Recovery” with a number of chief executive officers and finance sector leaders.

He will also participate in a panel discussion with academia, civil society and youth on “Small Island Developing States and The Future of Development”.

A UNDP statement said that the visit reasserts the organization’s solidarity with Jamaica’s Hurricane Melissa recovery agenda through UNDP’s Resilient Recovery Offer and is an opportunity to secure first hand assessments of impact by engaging with community members and partners of this ongoing cooperation.

De Croo’s visit to Jamaica is his first since assuming the Office of Administrator in December last year. As the Administrator, he leads a worldwide team of more 20,000 personnel across 170 countries and territories and will preside over a new global Strategic Plan 2026 to 2029. UNDP is the UN’s lead agency on international development with a global mission dedicated to helping countries eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and build resilience so people and nations can sustain progress.

Prior to his appointment, De Croo served as prime minister of Belgium from 2020 to 2025.
