Jamaica’s Card and Douglas Claim Silver in 100m at World U20 Championships

EUGENE, Oregon — Jamaica’s Gary Card and Shanoya Douglas delivered silver medal performances in the men’s and women’s 100m finals on Thursday night at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, securing the nation’s first medals of the competition at Hayward Field.

The double silver haul places Jamaica in ninth position on the medals table as the championships continue through the weekend.

American sprinters Tate Taylor and Mia Maxwell electrified the home crowd by capturing both gold medals, marking only the second time in championship history that athletes from the same country have accomplished the double.

The feat was previously achieved by Americans Noah Lyles and Candace Hill in Bydgoszcz, Poland, in 2016.

In a thrilling men’s final, Card burst from the blocks with exceptional speed but was tracked down by Taylor, who powered past the Jamaican to claim victory in a personal best 9.94 seconds.

Card clocked 10.05 seconds for silver, while South Africa’s Marko Ferreira took bronze in 10.16 seconds. 

The women’s race saw Maxwell gain an early advantage over Douglas and maintain her lead to the finish line, stopping the clock at 11.14 seconds.

Douglas crossed in 11.17 seconds, with Italy’s Kelly Ann Maevane Doualla Edimo securing bronze in 11.27 seconds. Jamaica’s Theianna-Lee Terrelonge placed sixth in 11.37 seconds.

Maxwell’s gold medal carries significant historical weight, marking the first American victory in the women’s 100m at the U20 Championships in a decade.

The triumph also snapped Jamaica’s four-championship winning streak in the event, which began with Briana Williams in 2018 and continued with Tina Clayton’s back-to-back victories in 2021 and 2022, followed by Alana Reid’s win in 2024.
