Nia Robinson Misses Out on Long Jump Medal, Jamaica Squeeze Through to Men’s 4x400m Final

TORUN, Poland – Nia Robinson of Jamaica finished just outside the medals in the women’s long jump on Sunday’s third and final day of the World Athletics Indoor Championships.

chartondenDevynne CharltonRobinson leapt 6.75 metres to finish fifth in the final, with Trinidad and Tobago’s Tyra Gittens placing 15th with her effort measured at 6.32 metres.

The event was won by Agate de Sousa of Portugal in 6.92 metres, with Italy’s Larissa Iapichino jumping 6.87 metres to grab silver and Natalia Linares of Columbia third with a season’s best leap of 6.80 metres.

Jamaica men’s 4×400 metre relay team narrowly qualified for the final after placing third in Heat 2 to be one of the fastest finishers outside the top two.

Their quartet of Reheem Hayles, Tyrice Taylor, Kimar Farquharson and Demar Francis clocked 3:05.68. Belgium won the heat in a season’s best 3:05.25 and Hungary, who set a new national record of 3:05.67 placed second.

Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas led a strong showing from the Caribbean in the women’s 60-metre hurdles.

Charlton, a two-time world champion, sped to victory in Heat 4 in 7.82 seconds to tie for the fastest time in the opening round and book her spot in the semifinals.

Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds also advanced by winning Heat 3 in 7.89 seconds, while Denisha Cartwright of The Bahamas ran a season’s best 7.96 seconds to also qualify.

Her colleague Charisma Taylor placed third in Heat 5 in a season’s best 7.97 seconds to also advance.

Oneka Wilson of Jamaica failed to advance after placing seventh in Heat 1 in 8.12 seconds.
