Rudolph Speid Names Youthful Reggae Boyz Squad For London’s Unity Cup

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Interim head coach Rudolph Speid signalled a clear shift toward the future on Wednesday, unveiling a 24-man Reggae Boyz squad loaded with teenagers for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London.

speidrupDamion Lowe (2nd left) is expected to captain the Reggae Boyz team at the Unity Cup.In a bold move designed to blend raw potential with veteran leadership, Speid has handed first-time senior call-ups to several youngsters, including 16-year-old Manchester City academy sensation Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri.

Joining Cadamarteri in the youth revolution are two members of the national Under-20 team. Goalkeeper Joshua Grant and Netherlands-based defender Marlon Van de Wetering.

Speid also named two 19-year-olds, forward Nick Simmonds and defender Odin Samuels-Smith, as the coaching staff looks to inject fresh energy into the squad.

Despite the influx of youth, experience will not be in short supply.

Veteran defender Damion Lowe, a colossal figure with 80 senior caps for the Reggae Boyz, is expected to captain and anchor the backline.

Seven locally based players have also earned their places on the plane to England.

The tournament, set to be played later this month at Charlton Athletic’s stadium, features a high-stakes knockout format.

Jamaica will face India in the first semi-final on May 27, following the Nigeria vs. Zimbabwe clash on May 26. The winners will battle for the trophy on May 30, preceded by the third-place play-off.

The Reggae Boyz will be seeking redemption after falling short in last year’s final, where they were defeated by three-time champions Nigeria.
